People we have met and places we have gone in the tropics...
Besakih, Bali
Part of one of the main temples in the Hindu religion, Besakih has stood the test of time. I was taken aback when I found out I had to wear a sarong, but when in Bali, do as the Balinese. Many people will tell you that this particular temple is odd in that getting in is a bit of a challenge. They tend to "nickel and dime" the visitors, but the reality is that it is really nickels and dimes. The process is more an annoyance than a bank breaker. Still, the three separate temples that make up the whole are a sight to behold.

Wilson a Costa Rican Wood Carver
Wilson seen here holding two of his carvings--the turtle out of palm root and the toucan from pilon--works in the wood shop and construction. As with so many of the people we meet on our travels, his talents are deep and rooted in something more than we see on the surface. His humility seems to match his pride. You can find Wilson's art in our store and online.

Reforested Trees in Costa Rica
Our reforestation partner, Finca Leola, employs over thirty people in their area. Here, they are thinning the weeds in one of the sections of reforested trees. One of the many aspects of Finca Leola that sets them apart is that they seek to replant the forest, not just cash crops. They are finding that in taking care of the whole, that the returns are there. We invite you to visit our Partnership page and then visit Finca Leola's site.

Ulu Watu, Bali
Perched on the edge of this cliff in Bali, Ulu Watu is one of the best know Sea Temples in all of Bali. Why? The Fire Dance and Waves. This is the place where surfers flock to Padang Padang and rip that classic, hollow left. I stood on the barren reef there and felt the waves pound. It is difficult to describe the beauty there. I was amused at the ding repair places lining the walk way to the beach. I wandered where one got the stitches, and thought that might be a good service.

Dancer in the Barong Dance
The Barong Dance is probably one of the Balinese traditions that everyone knows. These dances depict stories from the Ramayana, and employ lessons with beauty, humor, and attention to detail that are nothing short of delightful.
